No Heartbeat On The Doppler
|
I went to my first OB appointment today. Going by my last period, I am about 7 weeks pregnant. My doctor used a hand held doppler on my stomach but couldn't detect a heartbeat. He said not to worry, and that it may be too early to hear a heartbeat. This is my first pregnancy and I am still very nervous. How soon after conception should I be able to hear the heartbeat?

Thursday 18th of February 2010 03:48:49 PM Heartbeats are usually detected by about week 8. Don't go completely by the date of your last period, as your actual due date can be as much as two weeks out. The best thing is to wait until week 9 and try again for a heartbeat. If you still dont have anything, your Ob may arrange for you to have an ultrasound just to make sure that all is well. The most important thing is not to worry.

Thursday 18th of February 2010 04:40:48 AM As your doctor indicated it may be too early to detect a heartbeat, even if he had done an internal ultrasound. Usually by 9 weeks the heartbeat can be heard on an external ultrasound, it may be a bit later with a hand held doppler. If you are very anxious the best thing is to make an appointment for 4 weeks time and try not to think about it too much.

Saturday 20th of February 2010 04:37:37 PM Usualy after 6 weeks, but there are cases when the baby is not heard.
It could be some factors like, the baby is too small and not very active so his heart is not beating really fast, or the layer skin is too thick so the sound penetrate very hard,or another thing I have heard recently is that id you use a lot of cream to moisture your skin, the ultrasounds does not penetrate the skin properly so it is hard to monitoring the baby.
try not to use too much cream

Monday 22nd of February 2010 03:31:00 AM Its normal to be feeling nervous. Pregnancy is a strange and wonderful thing. Your baby's heart begins to beat at around nine weeks of pregnancy. I'm sure that at your next doctors appointment you will hear it. Trust your doctor, he deals with pregnant women every day! Things will progress at their own pace, in the meanwhile, take care of yourself and try not too worry too much.

Thursday 4th of March 2010 03:56:03 AM I do understand how you feel since this is the first for you on everything about pregnancy. It makes you whole the first time you hear the baby's heart beating. But then there is nothing to worry about. Normally the doctor can hear the beat within the 10 to the 12th week. Your doctor just wanted to take the chance that the heart beat could be heard during this 5th week but he knows that. So no worry. You'll hear the beat the next time you come around.
