How Long Can Postpartum Depression Last If It Goes Untreated?

My wife and I welcomed our first son 6 weeks ago. At first she seemed really excited and would hardly give me a chance to help her out. Now, she seems to have a hard time remembering simple things and she is slow to react if the baby is upset. I've asked her if she is alright and her response is always that she is fine, she's just tired. I really want her to talk to her doctor about it at her 6 week checkup, but she says that I am over-reacting. If it is postpartum depression, how long will it last if it goes untreated?
