How Do I Properly Clean My Baby's Ears?

At my last well-baby appointment, my son's pediatrician said that he had a lot of ear wax built up. He said that I should hold a warm wash cloth to his ears and it will loosen the wax. I've tried doing this, but it doesn't seem to help. How do I properly clean my baby's ears?
