Is It Necessary To Brush His Hair?

My son has very little hair and he's only 6 months old. My mom keeps telling me that I should use the baby brush and brush it anyway so that he gets used to it. When I try, he throws his head back and I've nearly brushed his eye a couple times. Is it really necessary to brush his hair?
