If I Discipline Him, Will He Hate Me?

My 3 year old is generally a good little boy. He does have his somewhat out of control moments when he'll scream or throw a fit, but they are few and far between. Today, he was having one of these episodes and hit hit me. I was so stunned, my first reaction was to spank his bottom. I feel so bad about it. I've never spanked him before and swore I never would. I'm afraid he won't forgive me. If I discipline him, will he hate me?
