Craving Inedible Objects
I'm 22 weeks pregnant. Lately, I have been craving items that are inedible. I am particularly interested in potting soil. I am embarrassed to tell anyone, even my doctor. What should I do?

Well the good news is that dirt will not harm you. If may taste like crap once you get it in your mouth but it will not kill you. There are actually some nutrients in dirt that are good for you. Just make sure that if you do decide to eat potting soil that it doesn't have any pesticides in it.

I cannot say that I have had that craving but I have heard of other women that had this or for instance craved chalk. I think it has got to do with the fact you might have a lack of a certain mineral (I think it indicates lack of iron)and it is your body saying to get some. I would immediately contact the doctor as a lack of iron is for sure not good for your or your baby.

There is nothing embarassing about your situation. Food cravings are normal among pregnant women. Cravings for inedible objects however is a different story. Please donīt be embarassed to tell your doctor about it because if thereīs one person who can help you out about your problem, then, itīs definitely your doctor. For the meantime, try diverting your attention to other foods/things. Keep yourself occupied and try engaging in very light activities instead. By being productive, you wonīt have time to even think of potting soil. Take care and goodluck with your pregnancy!

This is actually quite common. My sister-in-law used to eat plaster board and chalk! Your cravings tell you alot about what your body needs - in this case it will be trace minerals found in the soil, and that is why you crave it. Get a blood test done and check for deficiencies, and then address this problem with pregnancy specific supplements - your midwife wil be able to help you. Once your body has re-dressed the balance, you will stop craving soil. And no, it's nothing to be embarassed about!

do you want to eat that soil? seems strange but I have heard a lot of these kind of craving.I remember a women was craving for the painting from the wall, and she was eating it.Last week while I was on the parlor beauty , a lady there was telling that a friend of her was craving on the butcher arm, it sounds almost SF, but it really happened, so don't be embarrassed to tell to someone.

Pregnancy cravings is not just about food. There are women who hated their husband or mother in laws that she doesn't want to see them or touch her or speak to her. In your case it is just about the same so log as you won't eat it and clean up thoroughly right after. Pregnant women has a lot of drama which is why they say that being pregnant is not an easy task.
