Lactose Intolerance
|
I have a severe lactose intolerance. I know I am supposed to increase my dairy intake while I am pregnant, but that isn't an option for me. Are there other foods that I can substitute in order to meet my nutrition needs?

Thursday 18th of February 2010 07:11:47 AM Yes, most certainly. You can now buy a whole range of lacto-free foods from your major supermarket or you could choose to use soya products fortified with calcium instead. If non of these are viable, speak to your Dr who can prescribe you with calcium tablets at the correct strength for you and your baby.

Thursday 4th of March 2010 03:41:23 AM The most important nutrients that you must have during pregnancy is folic acid, iron and iodine. Your problem now is the calcium intake which you can get in green leafy vegetables, fruits, fish and yogurt. Get on with these regularly and an advise from the doctor as to what other vitamins or remedies you may need.

Friday 19th of February 2010 10:48:22 PM This might sound silly but there are lactose-free dairy products on the market, they might be a alternative source for you that you can tolorate. I also would (if you don't do this yet) start taking prenetal vitamin supplements and would check with the obstetrcian or midwife if you might need to take extra calcium tablets.

Sunday 21st of February 2010 06:35:32 AM The solution could be to use the enzyme lactase supplements. Lactase is an enzyme, which is provided to people with lactose intolerance in the form of capsules.
When eaten with dairy foods, the supplements provide the body enzyme lactase needed to comfortably digest milk sugar.
There are currently available in supermarkets milk with lactase added.

Sunday 21st of February 2010 03:20:48 PM you need to substitute the lactose food with some fruits or vegi that contains a lot of calcium.I know nuts are containing a lot of calcium and magnezium which are very important in this stage.
You should ask your doctor what to consume further.
You need to take good elements for you and for your kids.In the second pregnancy I consumed so low level of lactose elements and eat a lot of fruit. And it was ok.my kid is ok.

Monday 22nd of February 2010 02:43:36 AM Definitely take sufficient calcium and iron supplements while you are pregnant. And ensure that you have adequate sources of protein in your diet - eggs, meat, etc. We have a couple of members in our family who are lactose intolerant, and who do not cope well on normal cow's milk. They now drink goat's milk, which has proven to be very good. It is also healthier in general to cow's milk. Perhaps explore this option and discuss it with your doctor. There is also goat's cheese, yoghurt, feta etc.
