What Is Rsv And How Can I Avoid It?
|
My son is premature and I read that he is at higher risk for RSV. The article said that RSV can be very serious for a preemie, and that it was a common respiratory illness, but really wasn't more specific than that. What exactly is RSV and what measures can I take to avoid it?

Tuesday 2nd of March 2010 09:23:56 PM RSV aka respiratory syncytial virus which causes severe lung disease in newborns and infants. preemies are at higher risk for contracting this disease because lungs are not well developed yet or strong enough. The disease is spread by contact. Individuals get the virus from droplets in the air secreted in the nose or throat of infected people. There is no vaccine for older people. You prevent spread by using common precautions like frequent washing hands, sneezing into tissue instead of the air, not sharing drinks/food with infected individuals just like you would with any other flu-virus. No treatment for mild cases..will wear off like any flu-virus..treat with hydration, rest and tylenol for fever and pain. For severe cases patients are hospitalized and maybe treated with IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulins).
In premature babies who are at high risk of developing there is a vaccine called Pneumo conjugate which is given every 3-4 months for the first year of life. Talk to your pediatrician see if your baby qualifies to receive this.

Sunday 28th of February 2010 03:56:42 AM Respiratory syncytial virus or RSV, is an infection of the lungs and breathing passages. In short, it's a major cause of respiratory illness in small children.
While in adults, the symptoms display themselves as symptoms associated with the common cold, in preemies or small children, these same symptoms can be fatal.
The best precaustions to take involve:
1. Keeping your baby away from sick indviduals
2. Wearing a medical mask around your baby in the event you are sick
3. Ensuring any and everyone washes their hands before touching your baby
4. Limiting his/her time spent in crowded areas
5. Ensuring your baby gets the proper nutrition neccessary for a strong body and immune system
6. Breastfeed your baby if at all possible
