Is There A Limit To The Number Of Middle Names You Can Use?
When I got married I hyphenated my name. I'm proud of my last name and I want to share it with my children. My husband and I were thinking about using my maiden name as a second middle name for (for example: Jeffrey Ryan Cooper Smith). Is there a limit to how many middle names you can use on a birth certificate?

Techincally no, although you may want to think about what impact this will have on your baby in the future - especially when it comes to filling out forms that never have enough space to write your name! It is a personal choice, although the novelty does wear off and can become a bit of a pain. It really depends on you and your husband, but to make life easier, a simple name is easy!

As an individual with a hyphenated last name, I can guarantee that you can have at least two middle names, and a hyphenated last name. I have two middle names and my last name is hyphenated as I have both parents' last names as they couldn't agree on who's name to give me. When you are filling out the birth certificate, the registry is very accommodating.

I don't think there is any problem having any number of middle names for your child. The only problem I can imagine is not having room on the normal form to enter all the names in. You might want to contact your local government records department and see if they can tell you of any special procedures to do this. My aunt has three middle names, so I know it is possible.

In Michigan, I asked the DMV and they said, "Bottom line? It is 36 characters!"
