X-rays During Pregnancy
I am 16 weeks pregnant and I slipped on some ice. I fell on my arm and am afraid I may have broken a bone. I know that pregnant women shouldn't have x-rays. What are the risks to my baby? Will the doctor be able to treat me if I refuse an x-ray?

To have an x-ray while pregnant will mean using a special lead vest that the radiographer will strap to your chest and will cover your bump. As it is your arm and you will need a plaster cast of some kind, it is likely they will need to take an x-ray. They may decide to scan your arm using other means such as ultrasound instead. Either way, rest assured they will not put you or your baby at unnecessary risk.

There is a very minimal risk of cancer for the baby, but most doctors believe that keeping you healthy is the best way to care for you and your baby. X-rays are considered to be generally safe while pregnant. The best thing you can do if you are worried is to consult with your ob and the doctor treating you for your fall. Your OB should know about any fall you have anyway.

You will have to inform the doctor that you are pregnant and if you thinks you indeed have broken a bone a Xray is probably required. You do not really want to walk around with a broken bone for the next few months or have it grow back together in a wrong way. As it is your arm your uterus and therefore your baby should not be exposed to the radiation. But as said be sure to discuss it with the specialist before you have the xray

Radiation directly focus on the baby is really really bad. In your case it's the arm and quite far from your tummy. The x-ray technicians should be aware on this as he/she uses protective shield over your tummy. Aside from the fact that you're doctor will tell you what's best for you and will give specific instructions when x-ray is imperative.

I would definitely inform the specialist you are pregnant, but as it is your arm, your uterurs and therefore your baby should not get exposed to radiation during the Xray. I guess you better get it done than walk around with a broken bone in your arm for the next few months with the risk it grows back in the wrong way.

usually it is not ok to have an x-ray until 3 months old, after that age it is almost ok. they could see the bone locally without filming your belly. they will cover it with a plumb cover so it would not penetrate your body only the specific bone. I hope they will do the same, as here
