My Baby Has Been Hospitalized For Pink Eye.

My five year old woke up with pink eye 4 days ago. We went to the doctor and he got eye drops. It cleared up within a day. Yesterday, when my 3 week old woke up, his eyes were crusted shut. I cleaned them off and opened up his eyes. I've never seen someone's eyes so red. We went straight to the doctor and she said that he has a severe case of pink eye and that he needed to be hospitalized for treatment. I've never heard of someone being hospitalized for pink eye before. How long are they going to keep him and why can't he be treated at home?
