Over-the-counter Cough Remedies
I have developed a nagging cough. I read the labels on some over-the-counter cough syrups and they all contain alcohol. Are there any OTC cough remedies that are safe to take during pregnancy?

I would check with your doctor to see if there are OTC cough remedies that are safe. I know that most of them contain ephedrine. This might raise your blood pressure which is never good, but surely should be avoided when pregnant. Have you tried inhaling steam? Place your head above a warm bowl of water, put a towel over your head and breathe in regularly for a couple of minutes, it might help. If not definitely check with your doctor before taking the OTC products.

In my opinion when you're pregnant, you should always consult your doctor regarding taking any medication, even if extra vitamins. All that the mother and is absorbed by the baby, so the surveillance and response specialist is essential in this new life that start to come.

Your best bet is to speak to the pharmacist who will be able to advise you on the best way to deal with your cough. Never self-medicate as this is dangerous. You could try this old fashioned remedy that helped me enormously through a chest infection in my pregnancy. To one cup of just boiled water, add one tsp of honey (manuka if you can) and 1/4 tsp of ginger powder. Mix well and drink at least three times a day.

This is just my own personal opinion. Drinking prescribed medicine (other than vitamins) and over-the-counter drugs are unlikely for pregnant women. I have gone through 3 pregnancies and was given advise on these by so many people as well as my doctors. It's because of the particles that can penetrate the placenta covering the baby and we don't know which was is good and which one is bad. So might as well not take anything unless the doctor say so.

I would recommend trying to find a homeopathic or natural remedy. It is not good to take ordinary cough syrups while you are pregnant. Nowadays there are many more natural solutions available. Get the opinion of your doctor and/or pharmacist as well, so that you know you will not be taking anything that will harm your baby.
