2 Vessel Umbilical Cord--what Does This Mean?
I am 25 weeks pregnant and under the care of an OB and a neonatologist. I had back to back appointments, so my neonatologist gave me a copy of his notes to give to my OB. I read them. I didn't understand much, but I saw "2 vessel umbilical cord requires further observation". My doctor didn't mention it at the appointment, and I was too ashamed that I peeked to bring it up. What is a 2 vessel umbilical cord and what does it mean for my baby?

Usually the umbilical cord has one vein and two arteries carying oxygenated and deoxygenated blood to the baby.A 2 vessel umbilical cord has only one vein and one artery so there might be insufficient oxygenation of the baby. Or it can mean nothing and the baby will be ok.Ask the doctor for details.

hello there future mom, if your doctor did not mentioned anything about it it might mean that all is okay and there is nothing to worry about, the 2 vessel cord is what is knowing by single umbilical artery, the doctors is always looking to find 3 vessels, but sometimes happens that some umbilical cords just get 2 vessels, that means that normaly a umbilical cord has 1 vein and 2 arteries, but in your case your baby just have one vein and one artery, and one artery can perfectly carry on with the work that is supose to do. CHEERS.

I know that it is very hard to ask something that you're not supposed to know. Maybe your doctor just doesn't want you to worry about your condition or that of your baby. For a brief history, majority of fetal development involves having 3 (arteries and a vein) cords that are used to regulate and sustain life to the baby. But in you case you only have 2 (artery and vein). Some suggest that this type of development might post a risk in your pregnancy or the baby. Hence these are case to case basis. Some practitioners do not even think that this type of development might cause risk to your pregnancy. And that might be the reason why your doctor didn't mentioned it during your check up. Still you need to keep yourself healthy to help support your baby. If you are uncertain as to which your doctor is credible or not (because it's your right to know what the neonatologist found out), I suggest you ask another doctor for a second opinion. Just to be safe. Take care and congratulations!
