Sunday 4th of April 2010 03:14:10 AM I had gestational diabetes and it wasn't even the weight that caused it. Sometimes, pregnant women have a predisposition for it, especially if diabetes runs in the family. Another reason could be the advanced age when you have your baby. Women over 35 are most likely to have complications like gestational diabetes. But mostly, our hormones just create havoc in our body while we are pregnant.

Wednesday 31st of March 2010 12:27:45 PM What causes it is not well known; it is basically the inability of the body to create enough insulin when needed, so sugars stay in the blood instead of getting broken down. Many many women get it when they are pregnant though, and it is usually easily controlled with dietary restrictions and close watch of your blood sugar levels. It is very important to get it under control because it can have negative effects on your baby.
