Polycystic ovaries are a fairly common complaint. They do not cause infertility but the woman may not conceive easily. It is not a metabollic syndrome but more a hormonal one. Sometimes these cysts remain as they are at other times they may grow and have to be surgically removed. There is no treatment to dissolve them. The symptoms inclued irregular periods, excess of hair on your arms and legs and even on the face, acne and an increase in weight.

Polycystic Ovary disease can be a contributing factor to infertility but pregnancy is possible with proper treatment. Only about 5-10% of women in the age of 12-45 are affected by this and they can get treated with medication to increase the body's production of hormones. It is also possible for the treatment to require surgery.

PCOS directly affects fertility as many women do not ovulate properly as the cysts interfere with the release of eggs. Treatment is usually hormone based, and for those women who have lots of cysts or very large ones, keyhole surgery using a laser to burn off the cysts is the best treatment. Surgery is seen as a last resort as it can cause scarring that can affect fertility even more. You need to see your GP who will refer you to a gynaecologist for further tests and help. There is no cure for PCOS, it is more about managing the condition which can be greatly helped by eating a healthy diet and exercising.
