Doctor Gave My Husband Clomiphene.
My husband's doctor said that he had a below average sperm count. He prescribed him clomiphene to raise his sperm levels. I thought this was only for women? How can a fertility drug designed for a woman work for a man?

hello there. The drug work by increase the hormones that make the gonads that will increase the level of sperm production, so thats how the drug will work over men body, sometimes drugs that are be found to some specific problems can work pretty well to help other problems as well, its like when they find out a drug for stomach problems and some years after they find out in new studies that drug has more benefits for some other problems that are not occuring with the disgetive system.

Clomiphene increases free testosterone levels in men with both secondary hypogonadism and erectile dysfunction. Clomid ( clomiphene citrate) is the drug of first choice for inducing ovulation – making women grow eggs. It is cheap, effective, easily available and well tolerated. It is also used for superovulating normal women to help them grow more eggs, but some time it is also used for men. More details can be had from http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12904801.

Fertility drugs are medications that are used to influence ovulation. Some fertility drugs are meant to strength or trigger ovulation, while others suppress ovulation. (I know –- sounds backwards. I'll explain more below.) Fertility drugs can also be used in men to treat male factor infertility, but this is less common. Generally, fertility drugs are used to treat problems with ovulation or recurrent miscarriage. However, this is not always the case. For example, sometimes the woman does not have ovulatory problems, but the man's fertility issues require IVF treatment. In this case, fertility drugs may be used to increase the number of eggs the woman produces, in order to retrieve the eggs for IVF treatment. clomiphene citrate, is often the first drug tried when treating ovulatory dysfunction. The risks of side effects, like multiple pregnancy and ovulation hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), are less with Clomid, when compared to gonadotropins (FSH, hCG, and hMG). And so do we have other such kind also.
