Cystic Fibrosis And Genetic Counseling
My brother was born with cystic fibrosis. My husband and I are considering seeking a genetic counselor for a consultation. Are there any tests that we can have run to determine our risk? What can we expect from our consultation?

yes ,there is a test for determining if you are carrying the gene for cystic fibrosis. The test results may show that you may be an active carrier of the gene or you may even be a dormant carrier.whatever the result,as soon you conceive,it is better to take the blood test to determine cystic fibrosis.Your genetic counselor should be able to guide you.

From my pregnancy guide, I understand there is no actual test available to determine if the parents have the defective gene. A test is possible, later on in the pregnancy, that analyses the amniotic fluid to determine if your baby's lungs are mature. I think a consultation with a geneticist will be a good idea.

If there are any cases of cystic fibrosis in the family a couple would have to have some tests done to make sure that these genes are not going tobe carried over to the unborn child. The counselor will advise you on what tests are required and will guide you to the hospital which condusts these tests.

Your genetic counsellor will run some simple tests to check if you are both carrying the gene. Since cystic fibrosis only occurs in children whose both parents carry the gene, a blood test will be taken to check the cells for any problems. A sample may also be taken from the inside of your cheeks by scraping some cells from them and checking for the cystic fibrosis gene. You will then be given your chances of having children born with the condition.

There are a few different tests that can be done to determine whether you are carriers. You have a Genetic Carrier Testing done to find out if both you and your husband carries the Cystic Fibrosis Gene. You are likely to be a carrier but if you husband is not a carrier, you are like to give birth to normal healthy babies.
