Can I Use Support Hose For Swelling?
|
My feet and legs are swelling a lot. It is especially bad when I've been sitting at my desk all day. I've tried using a footstool and taking off my shoes. Can I use support hose for the swelling?

Monday 15th of March 2010 07:13:59 AM Hello dear you can use some special socks that help your blood circulation on your legs and feet get better, second you should drink water regularly and eat less salt, put your legs up too that helps your blood circulate more as well, the swolle feet and legs are a indicance of blood presure problems and retention of liquids in the body. so that are the things you must use helping yourself. The special socks are medical indications to be wearing when you are pregnant.

Wednesday 24th of March 2010 02:36:13 AM You may need compression stockings if you have:
A tired, sore or heavy feeling in your legs
Leg pain from regularly sitting or standing for long periods of time
Ankle or leg swelling by the end of the day or if you suffer from edema
Numbness or a tingling or burning sensation in your legs and/or feet
Skin discoloration
Varicose or spider veins
Family history of vein problems
Support hose come in a variety of compression ratios, allowing them to treat mild to major leg problems. You can also purchase them in a variety of styles, including knee-highs, thigh highs, pantyhose, maternity pantyhose and travel socks (commonly recommended for use on flights). Stockings are often sold individually since it is not unusual to only need one compression stocking.
Compression stockings are recognized as a medically accepted device. Therefore, many insurance companies will cover the cost of the stockings as long as you have a doctor’s prescription. Although support hose are a much cheaper and more convenient form of treatment compared to surgery for varicose veins, they are typically much more expensive than regular pantyhose. Depending on the strength and style of hose you buy, prices can range anywhere from $30 to more than $100.
While you may think it is silly to get a prescription for pantyhose, if your leg problems are particularly bad, you will need to have a prescription to get the stockings in the first place. Only stockings with the lowest compression ratio are available without a prescription.

Tuesday 23rd of March 2010 03:05:21 AM I don't think it's a good idea to use support hose for the swelling unless recommended by your doctor. Circulation is very important during pregnancy specially during the later months when you tend to have lots of cramps. I started swelling during the later parts of my pregnancy and was probably due to lack of calcium and too much salt intake. I also spend a lot of time sitting in front of the pc. It's best to try and move around as much as you can. And it's a good thing to place your feet on top of a foot stool.
