Phenobarbital And Pregnancy
|
I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was young. I have been taking Phenobarbital to control my seizures. I feel that I should continue to take my medication as prescribed. Will the Phenobarbital have any adverse effects on my baby?

Tuesday 2nd of March 2010 11:16:09 AM It is possible for your baby to have birth defects due to the Phenobarbital. However, many women who take the drug give birth to very healthy babies. Don't stop taking your medication or a seizure may injure your baby. Speak with your doctor about possibly reducing the medication and about taking Folic Acid. It can help prevent a birth defect.

Wednesday 17th of February 2010 01:22:09 AM To be honest I have no idea. I think the best place to get an answer to such a difficult question is with your doctor (or specialist). He knows you and your history with epilepsy and your medication usage. If your current medicine is not the best one for the baby, may be he can prescribe you an alternative that is safe for both of you.

Only the doctor would know what kind of medicine is good for you now.
I am not aware what the treatment is but my only advice is to consult a doctor.I am sure you monitorize your kid, so you need to tell this issue to your doctor.

Saturday 20th of February 2010 10:19:45 AM One cannot say that it is completely safe to be on phenobarbital during pregnancy. There are more defects in babies born to women who are on this drug when compared to those who are not. Unfortunately the baby may get kind of "hooked" on to the drug and will have withdrawal symptoms too as the drug does get passed onto the baby. Larger doses of folic acid taken every day will help in preventing birth defects. Anyway it is better to comsult your doctor on the dosage before deciding on taking it on your own.

Saturday 20th of February 2010 02:14:00 PM One of the most important things for a woman to guard while she is pregnant is that she remains healthy during the nine-month period. This is because anything that influences the mother will affect the child in her womb. Therefore, taking this into the mind, women should be conscious that any pre-existing disorder they might have and the medicines that they are taking can have an intense impact on their pregnancy and their baby.
It is highly advised that women visit their accoucheurs monthly throughout a normal pregnancy, but for women with preexisting conditions this may occur with more often ness so that their doctors can monitor the progress of the pregnancy. They are able to find out the condition of both mothers as well as the baby.
For a woman with preexisting conditions who is planning to become pregnant, it is a must to discuss with a doctor before impregnation happens. A doctor will be able to help out & explain the risks the condition puts forward to the pregnancy and helps her evaluate the deceptions of carrying a child. This is called preconception planning, which is very helpful for a safe and healthy pregnancy.
