|
I'm 7 weeks pregnant and have so many questions. Fetal development is such a complex operation. I'm overwhelmed by it all. For example, when does an embryo become a fetus and what marks that transition?

Monday 15th of March 2010 05:30:24 AM a embryo becomes a fetus as long as he start to develop his cerebral activit and his organs are getting to the fiuctions, we must say when his brain start to indicate life it is the time that he is not a embryo anymore and now he is a fetus, it usualy happens after the 8 weeks be completed, what marks the transictions are that now his organs and brain are assuming their fuctions .

Wednesday 24th of March 2010 12:46:35 PM Hi and congratulation for having a baby. Regarding your question, you are about to enter the 8th week which is when the embryo now changes into a fetus. This is the part wherein the internal organs, like the brain, lungs, kidneys starts to function already. The baby's fingers and toes have probably taken their shapes also by this time.

Wednesday 24th of March 2010 12:12:38 AM According to Wikipedia dictionary: An embryo (irregularly from Greek: ἔμβρυον, plural ἔμβρυα, lit. "that which grows," from en- "in" + bryein "to swell, be full"; the proper Latinate form would be embryum) is a multicellular diploid eukaryote in its earliest stage of development, from the time of first cell division until birth, hatching, or germination. In humans, it is called an embryo until about eight weeks after fertilization (i.e. ten weeks LMP), and from then it is instead called a fetus.
A fetus (also spelled foetus, ftus, faetus or fætus, see below) is a developing mammal or other viviparous vertebrate after the embryonic stage and before birth. The plural is fetuses.
In humans, the fetal stage of prenatal development starts at the beginning of the 11th week in gestational age, which is the 9th week after fertilization.
