Wednesday 24th of March 2010 06:03:24 PM Ther are two options with blood donation. The first option is private which is probably where you are getting your information from. Try contacting your local hospital, they should be able to tell you who the public ones are since they will be the ones sending the cord to them.

Monday 29th of March 2010 01:43:23 AM I went through the same thing when I was trying to make the decision. I found this site very helpful - http://parentsguidecordblood.org - it is full of great information, and doesn't try to sell you anything. You may also want to look up the regulation information on the FDA site (www.fda.gov) if you are looking for more technical information. The FDA site also has health notifications regarding cord blood banks that have not met FDA standards.

Monday 22nd of March 2010 06:25:16 AM Professional medical opinion and consulting other reliable sources is a must before decision making in order to know do you or don't you want to bank umbilical cord blood.
Form of the birth is not an obstacle and doctors and nurses will know how to proceed in collecting baby's umbilical cord blood if you decide so. After cord blood is collected it is cryogenically frozen and stored in a cord blood bank.
Cryogenically frozen means cooling to low sub zero temperatures that effectively stops biological activity. Life span of cryogenically frozen cells is still unknown. First umbilical cord blood was collected in 1970s and is still viable today. Long life span of such frozen blood is to be expected same as it s need in more and more medical problems.
American Association of Pediatrics recommends that families without known family history of diseases that can be treated with umbilical blood stem cells do not bank it.
Price of preserving and storing umbilical cord blood is above 1500USD. That makes cord blood banks out of reach for some people and they have to weigh their decision based on all facts.
The most reliable source is http://www.bioportfolio.com/cgi-bin/acatalog/info_589.html here you can find the best of your need and you can also check http://www.cordbloodcells.net/cordblood/how-safe-is-umbilical-cord-blood-transplant/
