I Have No Insurance, Can I Still Get Care?
I have no health insurance and just found out that I am pregnant. I've had trouble in the past getting services for different things because the doctor's office is afraid I can't pay. Without insurance, can they refuse to give me prenatal care?

Talk to your doctor and explain the situation, If he /she can't help he/she should be able to refer you to a center where you can be treated. Usually in every town there is a health clinic for indigent patients. You may want to look in the yellow pages for your area and look for pregnancy centers...get in touch with them as soon as possible since 1st trimester is always critical. If not already taking thiamine and folate take one aday. You can buy these. over the counter along with a prenatal vitamin also over the counter. you will not be refused care because you have no or insufficient insurance

There are programs that offer assistance to pregnant women. The government offers the medical card if your income meets a certain standard. Most states now have some sort of free clinic or a clinic is based on your income. The best place to start is by contacting social services. They usually know where these places are and how to apply for the assistance that is offered. Your city should have a health department which also offers prenatal care based on income. When you are pregnant you and your baby need the prenatal care to help with the pregnancy. Someone knows where to find care that will either be free or uses a sliding fee scale.

I don't know what the law says about that but, if you are low income there are places you can get care. If you are not low income and you can pay for the services I would recommend that you talk to a doctor and give him a deposit up front. He/she will be able to tell you what the cost will be. The same with the hospital you would go to. You can talk to a hospital social worker and they can tell you what the delivery and your hospital stay will cost (providing all goes smoothly). When the time comes you can arrange to pay in full or make monthly payments.
