My recent pregnancy ultrasound examination shows that my baby has cleft lip. Doctor is not too sure about cleft palate though. I am 6 months pregnant. Should i wait or abort?

Tuesday 2nd of March 2010 11:42:31 AM I don't think that a cleft lip or palate is a reason to have an abortion. First of all,it is pretty hard to determine even with an ultrasound. Also, this isn't the end of the world. It may cause some difficulties when the baby is small, but these problems can be corrected quite easily through surgery.

Monday 1st of March 2010 12:25:17 AM I am sorry to hear of your situation, there is good news however. Cleft palate is very treatable. It's important to know that there are options to provide your child with a favorable quality of life. There are several support groups such as Operation Smile and CPF (Cleft Palate Foundation) that will educate you and help allay your fears of this facial disorder.
Since your doctor is not too sure about cleft palate, look for doctors that know a little more about it and get a second, third, even fourth opinion.
With all the resources available to you, your child should still be able to experience a quality of life that will keep him or her healthy and happy.

Friday 12th of March 2010 01:26:45 AM YOUR DOCTOR IS THE BEST PERSON TO ASK THIS QUESTION. HOWEVER, JUST ON THE PERSONALS SIDE THE DOCTOR ISN'T SURE ABOUT IT AT THIS POINT IN TIME AND NO ONE WILL KNOW FOR SURE. I'D RATHER WAIT AND SEE. ANYWAY TECHNOLOGY NOW IS SO VAST THAT IT CAN BE REPAIRED IF EVER.

Friday 26th of February 2010 07:22:09 PM Legally, you cannot abort a baby after 24 weeks - it is cruel as the baby can feel the pain. Cleft lip is easily treated with surgery - my neice had it done as a baby. She is now a beautiful 15 year old with the tiniest of scars that is hardly noticable. How would you feel if you aborted only to realise that baby was normal? You would be devastated.
