It would be in your best interest to talke with your doctor before planning a pregnancy. Since you have been experiencing irregular cycles, it could indicate a serious problem that needs to be addressed. It's always better to get a full physical exam, as well as bloodwork to ensure everything is okay.

you should definitely seek the advice of your physician prior to conception. There are many causes for irregular periods...some are hormonal, others are due to thyroid problems, some can be due to uterine fibroids, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian disease as well as other more serious conditions like uterine cancer. All of these causes can preclude getting pregnant but can also cause problems during pregnancy if present and may even lead to fetal deformities or problems once born(like thyroid disease)if not treated before hand.

MY SUGGESTION IS YES. MY SISTER HAS IRREGULAR MENSTRUATION TOO. SHE GOT MARRIED AT THE AGE OF 35, THE MORE THAT SHE FIND A HARD TIME GETTING PREGNANT. IT TOOK HER ABOUT 2 YEARS BEFORE AND NOW SHE HAVE A HEALTHY 14 YRS OLD GIRL. HER DOCTOR HELPED HER TO CARRY ON WITH THE ISSUE.

Definitely you need to consult a doctor, and not because you have some diseases but to prevent them. You need to be checked especially if you did not protect yourself against pregnancy. If you did not and the pregnancy never appeared could be some problems to you or maybe to your husband. So yeah, definitely need to check. I had such irregular periods before and the problem was my ovaries did not functioned well, so I need them to be fixed before I was able to conceive.

If the cause of your irregular periods is known, then you need to try and resolve the problem first. If there is no known medical reason, then Doctors advise trying for a baby for a minimum of two years before seeking help. Once two years have gone, the Dr will then do a series of tests to check what problems could be causing the infertility. This will also mean checking your partner.
