Toxaemia or preeclampsia is the medical term given to pregnant women who suffer from severe blood pressure problems, headaches, swelling in the body and stomach pain. It is dangerous for both mother and child and can cause death if left untreated. There is evidence to suggest that it runs in families, but this is no guarantee that you will have it. There is little you can do to prevent it, but being fit and healthy and a good body weight is thought to be preventative, but not a cure. Women who have the condition are usually ordered bed rest and lying on your left side.

There is nothing that you can do to control it. They say it can run in families, but nothing to prove it, and is more often with first time pregnancies. My mother in law had high blood pressure with both of her boys.(My daughters father included). I had borderline toxemia with my daughter, but my mother never had any issues, so just try to take it easy, and bed rest is normally what happens once your blood pressure starts to go up.

toxemia is usually referred to a generalized condition caused by release of bacterial toxins in the blood stream. Symptoms are fever,, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, hypotension(low blood pressure) and rash. However, some people refer to toxemia as a close related entity to eclampsia (Hypertension--high blood pressure and high protein count in the urine) Eclampsia although it affects 5-8% of all pregnancies there seems to be an increase in familial eclampsia. Consult your OB-Gyn doctor and let them know there is a family history of eclamsia so they can monitor and make necessary adjustments in care.

Toxemia is not hereditary. It happen only during pregnancy and can only be cured when you give birth. My guess it's all about diet and regular prenatal check up. It's high blood pressure, so what causes it always starts with the food we eat, so why not arrange your diet to at least prevent Toxemia.
