Swollen Feet
I am almost to the end of my pregnancy and my feet are so swollen that it is hard to wear shoes. I sit at a desk all day at work and by the end of the day it is painful to walk on them. Is there anything I can do to reduce the swelling and discomfort?

When lying down, get your feet up past your hips - you can do this by elavting feet onto a pillow. The swelling is caused by fluid retention and resting often with feet up is the best remedy as is drinking lots of water to help flush your system. As for work, you should wear wide fitting comfortable flats and get up and walk as often as you can - sitting for long periods encourages fluid retention. While at your desk, get into the habit of circling your feet. I used to write the alphabet in the air with both feet every hour or so! If it is very uncomfortable, your Ob can give you support tights to wear.

The best thing to do is bring a small stool, or use a stack of books to elevate your feet while you are sitting at work. Avoid tight stockings and socks, and massage your feet with mint scented foot lotions or body oils to refresh your feet before putting on your footwear.

When you get home, lie down on your bed and elevate your feet. The swelling may be cause by stressed nerves due to your weight which is increasing as you go through your pregnancy. Some doctors would advise you to have your blood pressure checked because if your BP is elevated you might be suffering from edema or excessive water retention. That is why it is still best for you to consult your doctor on this.

That water retention which sometimes we can't avoid while we are pregnant and working at the same time. I was on the same situation then so what I did was to put a small stool under the table so I could put up my feet while working. Every now and then I put it up higher, stomach level just under the table.
