Amniocentesis
I had my mid-pregnancy ultrasound this afternoon. The doctor said that he saw an abnormality on my baby's stomach. He says that this defect often presents itself in children with Down Syndrome. He wants me to have an amniocentesis. Are there any risks to my baby if I have this done?

The good news about amniocentesis is that you can find out for sure if there is a genetic problem with your baby. It is much safer than it used to be because of improved ultra sound technology. Ask your doctor how many times he has performed this procedure, and any problems he has had. Also consider what this information would do for you. Would it change anything in your plans to know you have a baby with these problems? You could consider not having the procedure if it wouldn't change anything, but it would be valuable information to have either way.

Any invasive procedure carries some form of risk. With amniocentesis, a needle is inserted into the stomach to take a sample of amniotic fluid - this can tell you alot about the baby's health. The risk of this procedure is a 0.5% chance of miscarriage. There is also a chance of damage to the baby's limbs with the needle. Talk over concerns with your Ob. There is little point in having this procedure done unless you want to make a decision to abort based on your baby's health.

There is a risk of 1 in every 100 women (1%) spontaneously abort after an amniocentesis, but need not be frightened by this factor. With care and bed rest after the exam, it is safe to do amniocentesis. Just follow in integrating the advice of your doctor.

Doctor will get sample of amniotic fluid, the fluid surrounding your baby. So there is no risk involve in fact beneficial for you as you can get to fin out at this early. There are no risk to the baby actually but it's the only way to find out the problem instead of waiting for you to deliver.
