Are Babies Really That Expensive?

I am only just past my first trimester with our first child but I am getting very excited to greet our new little one! I am trying to adjust our budget to accomodate for our new baby and have heard babies are always more expensive than you imagine them to be. Are they really that expensive? What makes them expensive?
