Non-stress Test
I am nearing the end of my pregnancy and the nurse at my obstetrician's office said that I will be having a non-stress test during my appointment next week. What is this test? What does it determine? Does everyone get one, or is my doctor concerned about my stress level?

A non-stress test is a very simple procedure that gives your doctor a good idea of what is going on with your baby. It is actually much like what it will be like when you go to the hospital to deliver. They strap you up with a fetal monitor, and a uterine monitor, and you just lay there while they check the baby's heart rate and your contractions (of which there are usually none.) This test is usually done for everyone, and a really good way to make sure everything is fine with the baby.

It's just to check on your baby's state of health. Usually being done either because the mother is way past due to nearing it's due. In your case, it is probably due to several factors i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure and other medical reasons that you've had. Or it may also be related to your previous pregnancy i.e. breech or miscarriage. Doctor's just wanted assurance and so do you.

A non-stress test is a simple procedure which monitors your baby's heart rate and is usually done if you have any of the following: diabetes, high blood pressure, past your due date, small babies, not enough amniotic fluid or too much, previous complications with pregnancies. This is a straight forward and painless test and doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with the baby.

You are lucky that your doctor is providing your with enough tests to see your baby's condition inside your womb. The NST or the non-stress test is the doctor's way of seeing your baby's status inside your womb. The baby's heart rate will be followed using a machine that pretty much resembles an ECG machine. In every movement or kick of baby inside your tummy you will press a button on that machine. Thru that, they can determine whether the baby is weak or strong. This can be a doctor's way of gauging whether you must deliver the baby already or the baby is just fine in your tummy.
