Is Night Time Coughing An Early Sign Of Asthma?

My daughter has been suffering from intense night time coughing. She seems to be perfectly fine during the day but starts coughing in her sleep mostly around midnight. Our GP has prescribed Ventolin but I am not convinced this is what she needs. Isn’t Ventolin supposed to treat asthma?
