Can I Help Improve My Son’s Eyesight?

My son is 3 and nose-dives into the book when reading it. I took him to the ophthalmologist who suggested we wait for a year before putting glasses on him. I can’t really come to terms with it. Is there anything I can do to improve his eyesight?
