Does Meningitis Classify As A Neonatal Infection?

How do babies contract meningitis? Does it have to come from the birth canal or can they contract the virus externally? I’m concerned because a close friend lost her baby due to meningitis and I just want to make sure I can prevent it happening. Is there any way I can protect my baby from getting the infection?
