How Many References Should Be Checked When Selecting A Baby-sitter?

I just feel that they would give contact details of their own family and friends to count as references and maybe the police would be the most reliable reference. If they havent had a police check done themselves can I contact the police and check with them as well or is that going too far?

Three references will do and I think will suffice your background checking. It is very necessary to have background check to their friends, relatives and previous employer since several baby sitters are illegal now and even wrong doers, too. Please taken note that you have entrusted this person to take care of your baby, so better be safe.
