What Is The Best Way To Stop Profuse Bleeding In A Child From A Cut Or Wound?

I was babysitting a little girl yesterday and just when her mother returned and I was about to leave, the child cut her finger with a pencil sharpner. The cut was on her fingertip and it wouldnt stop bleeding for so long. Eventually I had to go and I left her mother to deal with it. I have no clue what I would have done in a situation like that.
