How Can I Practise Safe Swimming With Chidlren Who I Am Baby-sitting?

I have been baby-sitting for a family for the last three weekends. They have a pool in their house and the children often ask me if they can go for a swim. Im just not very confident so I try to distract them. If they insist on swimming should I stand by and watch or must I be in the pool with them?
