Uncomfortable When Sleeping
|
I usually sleep on my stomach, but now that I am 20 weeks along that isn't an option. I am having a hard time adjusting to sleeping on my side. Do you have any suggestions for more comfortable sleep positions?

Friday 19th of February 2010 09:22:29 AM The best way to get comfortable is to use a body cushion - these are available from all good baby stores. They are expensive though, so a cheaper option maybe to use two cushions - one placed under your bump to support your tummy, and the other placed in between your knees (bend knees at an angle) to help align your pelvis. Or you could use a V shaped cushion, again, with one part under your bump, and the other between your knees.

Friday 26th of February 2010 07:14:17 AM Doctors generally recommend that sleeping on your side is best for you and for baby. To make sleeping on your side a bit more comfortable, you may want to invest in a maternity pillow. I found that once I was about 5-6 month pregnant that my tummy was big enough to start using one of these pillows. What a difference it made! They are generally a good compact size that doesn't take over the bed and they are easy to shift around as needed. I used a wedge one which looked like a big slice of cheese that was great as I could slip the narrower part under my side and the support gently curved around my expanding belly. It definitely made sleeping on the side a lot more comfortable - the support really helps. Maternity pillows do come in different sizes and shapes, though, so it is best to shop around. Websites like Amazon.com have a pretty good selection and there are many helpful reviews to make your choice easier.

Sunday 28th of February 2010 03:33:17 AM The best thing to do in a situation like this, is to purchase a body pillow that provides the extra comforted needed during pregnancy.
Boppy manufactures a really great full body pillow that works for any sleep position. With a body pillow supporting and hugging your entire body, you should find sleeping on your side much more pleasent.

Saturday 6th of March 2010 04:50:40 AM Actually there is nothing to suggest except on your back or on your side. Otherwise you are risking your unborn baby. You’ll get used to it as you progress in your pregnancy. Try putting pillow or pillows on your chest. That way you have that feeling of weight on your chest because sometimes it’s just psychological.

Sunday 28th of February 2010 06:08:24 AM The most common suggestion would be to sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs. It might work but it didn't for me. Try using a body pillow. If you put the body pillow in front of you and your arm from the side you are sleeping on under the pillow to prop your head on, it almost simulates sleeping on your stomach. The pressure on your stomach is not your body weight, so it is safer and with your arm raised above your head it's like you are sleeping on your stomach.
