What Is Pku And Why Was My Son Tested?

When my son was in still in the hospital's nursery I saw a nurse drawing blood. I asked her what it was for and she said that it was a standard PKU screen and I could get the results from his pediatrician. I'm a first time dad and the whole thing sounds scary to me. What is a PKU screen and why did they do one on my son?
