Folic acid helps in the baby’s formation of the brain and spinal cord. Folate deficiency anemia is the lack of folic acid resulting into fatigue, headache, pallor, sore mouth and tongue. The worst of the matter when not treated is infertility and heart failure. Therefore how do you expect a complete and regular supply of oxygen to the fetus when there is a lack of these nutrients to help produce what is necessary?

Folic acid plays a crucial role in preventing neural tube defects such as spina bifida in babies. Anaemia in the mother can cause restless legs, lack of sleep, joint pains and exhaustion in the mother while in the baby it can cause low birth weight and premature birth. It can also lead to baby having anaemia later on in infancy. Make sure you take appropriate prenatal vitamins and see a Dr for more help and advice.

Taking folic acid reduces the risk of having a baby born with a defect of their spinal cord such as spina bifida and anencephaly. It also reduces the risk of having a baby born with a cleft lip and palate, and of premature labour.Folate deficiency in the mother may lead to glossitis, diarrhea, depression, confusion, and anemia. Fetal hemoglobin is the main oxygen transport protein in the fetus during the last seven months of development in the uterus and in the newborn until roughly 6 months old. Maternal Anemia's impact on the fetus is largely reduced because of the fetal hemoglobin's greater affinity to oxygen than the adult form, giving the developing fetus better access to oxygen from the mother's bloodstream.

Folic acid is essential in pregnancy. Deficiency in folic acid can lead to a problem called spina bifida, which can lead to abnormalities in the foetus, so folic acid helps build strong spine. It can be found in leafy vegetables and tablets containing 400mcg folic acid are available. It is recommended to take even before conceiving
