Gestational Diabetes
I am 29 weeks pregnant and have just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I have a appointment with a dietitian, and my doctor says that if I can't control my blood sugar with diet alone than I will have to take insulin shots. I'm really scared of needles. What are the risks to my baby and me if I don't follow the treatment plan?

When you have gestational Diabetes your baby's body will be larger than normal and such a large baby may need to be delivered by a surgical procedure called cesarean section, instead of naturally through the vagina. Your baby’s blood sugar will be too low and it may also need to get glucose through a tube into his or her blood.Your baby’s skin will turn yellowish and the whites of the eyes may change color—called jaundice. Your baby may also have trouble breathing and need oxygen The baby may have low mineral levels in the blood. This problem can causes muscle twitching or cramping, but can be treated by giving the baby extra minerals Women with gestational diabetes have an increased risk of pregnancy complications and developing diabetes later in life, especially if they were overweight before the pregnancy.

The main risks is that it affects development - diabetes in pregnancy results in abnormally large babies that are likely to result in caesareans and other complications for the mother. It can cause birth defects and stillbirth if not treated. You may not even be allowed home if the Dr's decide that your diabetes is out of control. You must adhere to the eating guidelines strictly.

Gestational diabetes sometimes happens during pregnancy and disappear after. Follow the treatment plan of your dietitian as they will only give you a list of what not to eat and what you can eat. It’s a change of diet going for more vegetables and fruits. You need to follow the treatment to avoid a negative effect on the baby and the possibility of having this for a very long period of time.
