Telling My Employer I'm Pregnant
|
I am 8 weeks pregnant and haven't told my boss that I am expecting yet. I am up for a promotion that involves a fair amount of travel. I am afraid that if my boss finds out that I will be taking a maternity leave in a few months that she won't consider me for the job. I feel really dishonest withholding this information, but this promotion could mean big things for my whole family. Should I come clean and tell her? What are my rights?

Friday 19th of February 2010 08:36:44 AM You have rights within the workplace and the law states that it is not permissable for any employer to withold promotion or treat you unfairly because you are pregnant. Occupational health and HR will be able to tell you your company policy on pregnancy, so make sure you are well informed. If your employer does treat you unfairly, you can raise a grievance against them and file a dispute with your union.

Sunday 28th of February 2010 05:47:32 AM You should tell your boss. Although your boss cannot exclude you from the promotion because you are pregnant, as that would be discrimination, it is definitely a factor to be considered. When you are pregnant your traveling capabilities are minimized. If the position requires a lot of traveling and you don't tell your boss now, if you do get the promotion, you might just lose it later for not being available.

Saturday 6th of March 2010 04:35:58 AM Coming clean is the best, no other way. However, I presume that your boss knows you are married therefore this will not be a surprise unless you signed a contract concerning pregnancy, then that is where the problem is. On the other hand, your right as a regular employee covers this aspect of married life. So I suggest come clean as early as now.
