I Don't Want Him Doing Stairs Without The Rails, Am I Holding Him Back?

My son is 3 1/2 and he hasn't had any real problems with his motor skills. I'm just afraid that I might be holding him back a little. My son can walk up and down the stairs fairly quickly without holding on to anything. This terrifies me, so I make him hold the railing. Am I teaching him not to be independent and holding him back?
