Tuesday 2nd of March 2010 06:25:58 PM If a known epileptic (seizure patient)becomes pregnant there is an increase risk of having seizures during the pregnancy and delivery particularly if seizures were not well controlled prior to conception. There is also a known increase risk of fetal abnormalities due to fact that mom is epileptic independent of seizure medications. Also a great number of seizure medications can increase risk of fetal abnormalities. Lithium is a medication used for various psychiatric conditions including Bipolar disease and can increase risk of seizures but patient and doctor have to weight risk and benefit of being off or on medication during pregnancy. It is extremely important for all seizure patients to discuss with their physician the idea of getting pregnant prior to conception to adjust medications appropriately or change medications or use double protection if not interested in becoming pregnant since some anti-convulsants can lower effect of birth-control pills. If already pregnant and stable on a seizure medication is always best to remain on that medication unless having problems. Bottom line talk to your physician often and frequently about any concerns or issues before, during and after pregnancy because some medicines can pass via milk to infant. Also if concerned most seizure medications have a pregnancy registry which you can access for further information.

Saturday 6th of March 2010 04:32:21 AM Pregnancy has a lot of risk,, that you have to remember. Food in take has risk, you should be aware of what you are eating. Exercise is also a risk, you have to know what kind of exercise you need to do during pregnancy. Health problem has risk, you have to be aware what you need to do when you get pregnant. And all these should be relayed to your obstetrician, of all person he/she would know what to do and will guide you all the way.

Monday 1st of March 2010 08:18:52 PM The biggest risk is to your baby. If you have an extended seizure, it could cut off enough oxygen to the baby to cause problems. This is one of those cases when the benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus. As far as the development of the fetus, babies born to epileptic women tend to be small, but otherwise normal. Make sure your OB knows that you have seizures, your OB will probably want to consult with a neurologist to work out the safest treatment for you and the baby. Make sure they know what medications you are on and were on before you got pregnant, and if you know why you have seizures and when they started, they will be more able to treat you and your baby. Tell them everything-their primary goal is to keep you stable so you can deliver a healthy baby. Hang in there, I know how scared you are, but let these people take care of you and your baby.
Take care of you two and let the doctors do their thing.
Godspeed

Friday 26th of February 2010 05:16:05 PM You definitely need to talk with your doctor on this issue.
of course must be some related factors.Convulsions can induce abortion or labor if is is near due time.
Anyway the baby is affected by this matter.try to relax and in this way the convulsions won't appear.
But my advice again is to talk with the doctor. He will prescribe you something safe for you and the baby.

Wednesday 3rd of March 2010 07:19:06 AM When a woman is pregnant, she is susceptible to risks like high blood, convulsions and heart disease. If a woman experiences any of these, there is a possibility of an abortion if the mother is not careful.
When a pregnant woman takes in Lithium, there is a possibility that the child inside the womb will be affected. Too much intake of Lithium in not good for the body .
