Is There A Way To Negotiate A Peaceful Goodbye?

My son gets extremely stressed out when I leave. I've been a stay-at-home mom since he was born and he relies on me for everything. I don't leave the house without him too often, but sometimes I just need to get away. We've been going through this separation anxiety for 6 months now. He's 18 months old. Is he old enough to strike a deal with yet? Can I tell him that we'll read his favorite book when I get back? Is he old enough to negotiate a peaceful goodbye?
