Is He Doing This On Purpose?

When my son was younger we dealt with three months of separation anxiety drama. After a while it just stopped. Now he is 2 1/2 and he has started throwing full-on tantrums when I leave, complete with lying on the floor and kicking in the air. A week or so ago, before this started, I had to leave while my husband was putting my son down for a nap and he started to cry. I came back and rocked him to sleep. Ever since then, he's had a tantrum when I leave. I think that he's trying to get me to stay because I came back to soothe him that one time. I've racked my brain trying to think of any other change that has happened since these episodes began and have come up with nothing. Is he doing this on purpose or should I be worried there is another underlying problem?
