Can I Still Handle My Cat?
|
I've heard over and over that I am not supposed to change any kitty litter when I'm pregnant because of toxoplasmosis. Does this mean that I can't pet and handle my cat either?

Friday 26th of February 2010 07:35:07 AM Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by the toxoplasma gondii parasite. This parasite is found in uncooked meat and in the soil outdoors. It can also be found in cats who have eaten raw meat, i.e. birds, mice, etc. and in the cat's feces.
Despite it being a serious infection, it is quite rare to actually get infected. It is safe to pet and handle your cat when pregnant as the infection is only likely to spread through your cat's feces - hence the litter box warnings you've heard about.
However, there are a few things you can do in general to minimize your risk of becoming infected.
- Only eat meat that is fully cooked
- Cleansiness is important! Always wash your hands after handling raw meat and fresh fruit and vegetables that have come straight from the garden.
- Ask another family member to clean out the cat's litter box. If you have to do it yourself, then wear gloves and wash your hands for extra reassurance.
-Wear gloves when your are gardening and wash hands thoroughly aftewards.
