How Will My Baby Know Not To Breathe In The Water?

I've seen pictures from my local YMCA where they had 6 month old babies taking swim lessons. The pictures were taken underwater and I can't help but feel panicky about it. If I start my son in lessons, how will he know not to breathe in the water?
